New Student Orientation
Strategized and designed a gamified, engaging, and asynchronous orientation for new Distance Education students. The orientation fosters a sense of connection, progression, and preparedness.

The Challenge
The existing orientation, housed in Canvas (the Learning Management System), lacked engagement and failed to meet the needs of incoming students. Feedback indicated that students felt disconnected and overwhelmed, and internal stakeholders preferred a more actionable, portal-based experience.
The Solution
I developed a dynamic orientation course centered around accessibility, motivation, and community-building. Key features included:

-
Spruce, a friendly new mascot to represent Distance Education
-
Digital swag rewards for students who complete the orientation
-
9 animated training videos
-
12 portal pages
-
A progress bar to visualize completion
-
A program-based leaderboard to foster friendly competition
-
Immediate and follow-up surveys to measure impact and improve future iterations

Training Videos
For each of the animated training videos, I wrote the script, recorded screen captures, and recorded myself for the voiceovers. My colleague Adia animated and finalized the orientation videos. Here is one example:
UX Design
I designed the user experience for this orientation using Figma, focusing on branding, engagement, and clarity. Below are a few embedded examples that showcase key design elements. For the best viewing experience, I recommend using the icon to display the design in full screen.
